Fin's 'Daft Punk' Ableton Live Template
The Most Accurate Template For The Daft Punk Workflow / Sound In Ableton Live
This Ableton Live Template has been created to help you mimic the workflow, character and sounds that Daft Punk were using back in the mid-to-late 90's!
Tell me more!
We know that during the recording of Homework, the duo were using the 'Mackie Micro-Series 1202' mixer (As evidenced by this iconic photo of Thomas in his bedroom studio), which acted as the brains of their studio, which only featured 8 Input Channels, and 2 Aux Returns (Although later during the 'Discovery' era they upgraded to the 'Mackie CR-1604', which has twice as many inputs).
Thats not all, I have also re-created the following other aspects of their studio to help you achieve the Daft Punk sound:
- An accurate replica of the Mackie 1202 EQ's;
- An emulation of the Alesis 3630 Compressor;
- A re-creation of the Roland TB-303 bass synth; and
- An emulation of the SP-1200 (And other Samplers) used by Daft Punk at the time
Whats inside the Template?
The Template has been set up with the following 8 Input Channels:
- Sampler #1 Channel:
- Sampler #2 Channel:
- Drum Machine Chanels:
- TB 303 Channel:
- Juno 106 / Misc. Channels:
Cool, How Do I Use It?
If you have Ableton installed, it should automatically pick up the .als filetype. If not, right click on the file, and select 'Open with Ableton'.
What Do I Need?
Minimum requirements for this device are as follows:
Operating System - Windows 10 (Build 1909 or higher) / MacOS High Sierra 10.13 (Or higher)
Ableton Version - Ableton Live 11.3.35 or higher (Compatible with Lite, Intro, Standard & Suite versions)
Storage - At least 16MB of storage
How to make the Template even better?
While there is only so much that can be done with Ableton's stock devices / effects, alot of things like the sounds of the 'Roland TB-303' and 'Roland Juno 106' cannot be as-faithfuly recreated in Ableton as some of the other devices listed above. As such, here is a list of some of the additional products you may want to look into to get the most out of this:
Roland TB-303 Recommendations:
- Best - Roland Cloud TB-303 ($19.99 p/m)
- Budget - D16 Group Phoscyon 2 (119€)
Roland Juno 106 Recommendations:
- Best - Roland Cloud Juno 106 ($19.99 p/m)
- Budget - TAL-U-NO LX (£55)
- Free - TAL-U-NO 62 (Windows Only)
For the Aux Returns / Sends, I recommend picking up an Impulse Response Loader plugin, and some Impulse Response Packs (Or IRs as they are often called) to replicate the Reverb sounds they were using at the time (Namely the 'Alesis Microverb III', 'Lexicon Vortex' and 'Ensoniq DP/4+')
Impulse Response Loader Plugin Recommendations:
- Free - Wave Arts Convology XT
- Free (With Ableton Live Suite) - Ableton Convolution Reverb
Reverb Impulse Response Packs:
Other Recommendations:
- WaveTracing SP950 [An additional SP-1200 emulator] (20€)
- DiscoDSP Nightshine Compressor [An additional 3630 emulator] (Free)
